railwayHafeet Rail has completed 40% of the work on the cross-border railway link between Oman and the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The joint venture of Etihad Rail, Oman Rail and Mubadala Investment is constructing a 238 km corridor via Al Ain, Al Buraimi, Sohar, and Wadi Al Jizzi. The construction progress to date includes 100,000 m³ of concrete work as well as the installation of 900 concrete piles and 130 box culverts. Extensive earthworks and tunnelling are underway along the routing in mountainous terrain and wadis. Flood control systems are also being integrated to ensure operational stability. Currently, 80 structures are in various stages of construction. The line connects key ports and industrial centres, including the Port of Sohar. The system will utilise signalling and communication systems that are interoperable between the networks of Oman and the UAE. These systems are designed for shorter headways and increased automation in freight transport, as well as in future passenger services. According to the company, the initial services will remain on schedule. The connection is geared towards cross-border freight transport and is intended to complement road transport between the two countries.
