Toshiba Supreme Consortium (HTSC) yesterday announced it has completed manufacturing of the first high-speed rail trainset for Taiwan and shipped it from Hitachi's Kasado Works facility in Japan to Taiwan.

Taiwan High Speed Rail Corp.

ordered 12 trainsets from HTSC in May 2023, Hitachi Ltd. officials said in a press release.

The rolling stock is based on the N700S, the latest Shinkansen model operated by Central Japan Railway Co. They are each about 300 meters in length and will operate at a maximum speed of about 186 mph. Trains are equipped with a self-propelled battery system using Toshiba's lithium-ion batteries as a backup power source.

Hitachi anticipates all 12 trainsets will enter commercial operation in Taiwan by the end of 2028. They will serve Taiwan's key north-south transportation corridor, company officials said.
