Kanpur Metro achieved a major engineering milestone as TBM ‘Gomati’ completed 4.10 km down-line tunneling between Rawatpur and Double Pulia. Work on the up-line section is also currently in full swing, with tunneling progressing steadily. Simultaneously, trial runs and ongoing works signal strong momentum across both metro corridors.

Introduction:

Kanpur Metro marked a significant achievement today as Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) ‘Gomati’ completed the 4.10-kilometre down-line tunneling of Corridor-2’s underground stretch between Rawatpur and Double Pulia. The development signals steady and rapid progress in one of Uttar Pradesh’s most ambitious urban transport projects.

Work on the corresponding up-line is currently underway by TBM ‘Parvati’, further accelerating construction activities on the corridor. Officials confirmed that work on both Metro corridors in Kanpur is progressing at a swift pace.

Corridor-2 – Strengthening Urban Connectivity:

The Kanpur Metro Rail Project consists of two corridors spanning 32.4 km:

The completion of the down-line tunneling in Corridor-2 represents a crucial engineering milestone. Underground construction in densely populated areas requires precision, advanced machinery, and strict safety measures. TBM ‘Gomati’ successfully navigated the complex stretch, reinforcing UPMRC’s commitment to timely execution.

Rapid Progress Across Corridors:

Kanpur Metro’s progress has been consistently impressive. The priority corridor between IIT Kanpur and Motijheel was completed and made operational on 28 December 2021 in a record time of just two years and one and a half months — a national benchmark in metro rail construction.

Adding to the momentum, Kanpur Metro recently conducted the first test run from Kanpur Central to Naubasta on the up-line of Corridor-1. The trial took place in the presence of UPMRC Managing Director Shri Sushil Kumar. During the inspection, critical systems such as:

were thoroughly examined to ensure operational readiness and safety standards.

UPMRC – Driving UP Towards ‘Metro Pradesh’:

The Uttar Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation Limited (UPMRCL) is a joint venture of the Government of India and the Government of Uttar Pradesh. It oversees three major metro projects:

Uttar Pradesh currently leads the country in the number of metro projects under development. The state aims to transform into a ‘Metro Pradesh’ by providing residents with world-class public transportation that is:

Notably, Kanpur Metro became the first metro service in Uttar Pradesh to launch the National Common Mobility Card (NCMC), enabling seamless travel across metros, buses, parking, and retail services nationwide.

Conclusion:

The successful breakthrough by TBM ‘Gomati’ marks another defining step in Kanpur Metro’s journey toward full-scale operations. With tunneling advancing steadily and trial runs underway, the project is reshaping urban mobility in the city. Kanpur is moving closer to faster, greener, and smarter public transportation for its citizens.
