railwayMajor works have started to upgrade Boronia Station in Victoria, with the project set to improve accessibility at the precinct and deliver a new landscaped plaza on Dorset Road.
Crews have started to clear the area where the new plaza will be built, which will link the station forecourt on Lupton Way with Dorset Road.
The space will introduce additional greenery and seating. The Victorian Government said it will also make it “safer and easier” for people to travel between the station and Boronia’s busy shopping precinct.
A new signalised pedestrian crossing on Dorset Road will further improve access to the station and nearby shops.
As construction progresses, Lupton Way will be closed to traffic from March until 27 late September. During this time, crews will widen the station concourse, install new platform shelters, and upgrade seating and lighting.
Designs released last year show a contemporary station forecourt with a canopy inspired by native flora from the nearby Dandenong Ranges, along with an expanded concourse to enhance connections across the rail line.
A small park near Boronia Junction Shopping Centre will include garden beds, trees, seating and a nature play area.
The project will also increase vegetation across the precinct, with more than 50 trees and approximately 3000 plants and shrubs to be added throughout the station area, Boronia Station Reserve and the new plaza.
Accessibility improvements will include a redesigned pick-up and drop-off zone on Lupton Way, upgraded footpaths to both station entrances, and additional bike hoops with improved cycling connections.
The Boronia Station Upgrade is expected to be completed in spring this year.
