railwayNetwork Rail has confirmed that Glasgow Central station’s high-level will partially reopen today, Wednesday 18 March.
The re-opening of a portion of the station will allow the return of both a number of ScotRail and cross-border train services.
The station was first closed on Sunday 8 March following a significant fire on Union Street and, following a handover of the site from the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service on Thursday 12 March, Glasgow City Council established a limited exclusion zone around the fire damaged building in order to protect both the public and those working nearby whilst remediation work takes place.
This cordon will remain in place for the foreseeable future, continuing to cover the upper part of Central Station, including the Union Street, Gordon Street and Hope Street entrances.

In order to allow for a partial reopening of some platforms, passengers will now be able to access the station via the low-level entrances, as well as the Hope Street carriage driveway, which is normally only used during special events. A number of facilities and shops with remain closed, with barriers and signage marking the exclusion zone.
Colleagues will be on hand to offer support for passengers, provide information and ensure everyone is able to move safely through the temporary arrangements.
Timetable changes are expected as a result of the overall reduced service capacity, and passengers have been urged to check journeys with their operator before travelling.
We’re grateful for the patience and understanding shown by passengers, businesses and the wider community over this past week. This has been an exceptionally challenging situation for everyone affected and I want to thank all those involved who have worked tirelessly to get us to the point where we can safely welcome people back to the station.
While temporary arrangements will remain in place for a little while longer, we want to reassure customers that our focus is on keeping them moving safely as services return. We’ll carry on working closely with all operators and partners to restore full access as soon as it is safe to do so.
