Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi flagged off five new train services, including two Amrit Bharat Express trains. The initiative includes two Amrit Bharat Express trains connecting key industrial, coastal and pilgrimage regions. The services are expected to benefit passengers across Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Telangana, Odisha and Jharkhand.

Introduction:

India’s railway network witnessed a significant expansion as Prime Minister Narendra Modi flagged off five new train services from Tiruchirappalli in Tamil Nadu on March 11, 2026. The new services include two Amrit Bharat Express trains, two Express trains, and one passenger train, along with another passenger service flagged off from Kerala.

The new railway initiatives aim to enhance connectivity across several states including Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Odisha and Jharkhand. By linking industrial hubs, coastal regions, pilgrimage centers and rural belts, these new trains are expected to benefit millions of passengers while strengthening India’s transportation infrastructure.

Apart from launching the train services, the Prime Minister also inaugurated three redeveloped railway stations under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme in Kerala and dedicated the Shoranur–Nilambur railway line electrification project to the nation.

These developments mark another milestone in India’s efforts to modernize railway infrastructure and provide faster, safer and more comfortable travel for citizens.

Five New Train Services Strengthening National Connectivity:

The five train services launched are expected to play a crucial role in improving travel options and strengthening connectivity across several important regions of the country.

Newly Launched Train Services:

In addition, the Palakkad – Pollachi passenger service from Kerala further enhances regional connectivity in the southern region. Each of these services addresses long-standing connectivity demands and provides affordable and convenient travel options for passengers.

Podanur–Dhanbad Amrit Bharat Express- Connecting Industry and Resources:

One of the most significant launches is the Podanur–Dhanbad Amrit Bharat Express, which for the first time directly connects Coimbatore’s industrial belt with eastern India’s coal and steel hub.

Coimbatore, often referred to as the industrial heart of Tamil Nadu, has long lacked a direct rail link to Jharkhand’s mineral-rich region. With this new train, passengers can now travel directly from Podanur to Dhanbad without changing trains.

Earlier, passengers had to travel through cities such as Chennai or Vijayawada and switch trains, adding several hours to their journey.

Key Benefits of the Podanur–Dhanbad Route:

The route connects major cities such as Salem, Renigunta, Vijayawada, Jharsuguda, Ranchi and Bokaro before reaching Dhanbad. This corridor links two crucial economic ecosystems — southern India’s manufacturing centers and eastern India’s energy and resource belt.

A Lifeline for Migrant Workers:

For thousands of migrant workers who travel between southern India and eastern states, the new Amrit Bharat Express will significantly reduce travel difficulties.

Many workers from Jharkhand, Bihar and Odisha are employed in the textile industries of Coimbatore and Tiruppur. For years, their journeys home involved multiple train changes, long waiting times and crowded routes.

The new service simplifies the journey by offering a direct and affordable travel option.

Amrit Bharat Express trains are designed specifically for such passengers, providing improved travel comfort while maintaining affordable ticket prices.

Key Features of Amrit Bharat Express:

With speeds up to 130 km/h, the trains represent a new generation of affordable long-distance rail travel.

Nagercoil–Charlapalli Amrit Bharat Express- Linking the Southern Coast to Telangana:

Another major addition is the Nagercoil–Charlapalli Amrit Bharat Express, which connects India’s southernmost region with Telangana.

Nagercoil, located near Kanyakumari, serves as an important coastal town. Until now, travelers from this region faced long journeys involving multiple train changes to reach Hyderabad and surrounding districts.

The new train creates a direct connection between Tamil Nadu’s southern coast and the Deccan region.

Impact of the New Route:

The service passes through several districts across Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, offering an important new travel corridor.

New Express Trains for Coastal and Pilgrimage Routes:

The Rameswaram–Mangaluru Express and Tirunelveli–Mangaluru Express further strengthen connectivity across the southern coastal belt.

These trains connect Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Karnataka, creating convenient travel options for passengers traveling between the three states.

Benefits of the New Express Trains:

The Rameswaram–Mangaluru Express is particularly significant for devotees traveling to the famous Ramanathaswamy Temple in Rameswaram, one of India’s most sacred pilgrimage sites.

The new route brings the temple closer to travelers from Karnataka and Kerala.

Improved Connectivity for the Cauvery Delta:

The Mayiladuthurai–Thiruvarur–Karaikkudi passenger service provides an important boost to the Cauvery Delta region.

This agriculturally rich belt has long required better transportation links to support economic and social mobility.

The new service connects key districts including:

Key Advantages:

The service is expected to significantly benefit daily commuters in the region.

Palakkad–Pollachi Train- Strengthening Kerala–Tamil Nadu Links:

The newly introduced Palakkad–Pollachi passenger train further improves regional connectivity between Kerala and Tamil Nadu.

Pollachi, known for its agricultural trade in bananas and coconuts, shares strong economic ties with Palakkad in Kerala.

For students, traders and daily commuters who travel between these towns, the train offers a faster and more affordable transportation option compared to road travel.

Modern Railway Infrastructure for Kerala:

Alongside the new train services, the Prime Minister inaugurated three redeveloped railway stations in Kerala under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme.

Newly Redeveloped Stations:

These stations have been upgraded with modern passenger amenities including:

The redevelopment was completed at a cost of approximately Rs. 52 crore.

Electrification of Shoranur–Nilambur Line:

Another important development was the electrification of the 65-kilometre Shoranur–Nilambur railway line in Kerala.

Completed at a cost of Rs. 90 crore, the electrification project offers several advantages.

Benefits of Electrification:

The electrification also supports Indian Railways’ broader push towards greener and more sustainable transportation.

Expanding the Amrit Bharat Express Network:

The launch of the two new Amrit Bharat Express trains marks a further expansion of the country’s growing network of affordable long-distance trains. Built at the Integral Coach Factory in Chennai under the Make in India initiative, these trains are designed to deliver modern features while remaining accessible to ordinary passengers. Since the first Amrit Bharat Express was introduced in 2024, the number of such trains has steadily increased. With the latest additions, the network now continues to expand across different regions of India.

The trains represent a major step in ensuring that modern rail travel reaches not only major metropolitan cities but also smaller towns and emerging industrial centers.

A Step Towards Inclusive Development:

Railways have always played a vital role in India’s development by connecting people, industries and markets. The newly launched train services highlight the government’s focus on expanding infrastructure beyond major cities to include smaller towns, rural regions and industrial clusters. By improving connectivity between southern and eastern India, the initiative strengthens trade routes, supports migrant workers, boosts tourism and creates new economic opportunities.

For millions of passengers who rely on trains for affordable travel, these services promise greater convenience and improved access to education, employment and healthcare.

Conclusion:

The launch of five new train services marks a major step toward strengthening India’s railway network and regional connectivity. By linking industrial hubs, coastal towns, pilgrimage centers and rural regions, the initiative enhances mobility and economic growth. With modern trains and upgraded infrastructure, Indian Railways continues moving toward a more connected and inclusive future.
