A bigger, elevated station is set to open in Melton, Victoria on September 1.

The new station is more modern and accessible, featuring two entrances and lift and stair access via a 16-metre-wide station underpass.

Four new platforms have been built, with two of them suitable for longer VLocity trains.

These trains will be able to run on the line from next year, increasing capacity by 50 per cent at peak times.

Three “dangerous and congested” level crossings in the station precinct are being removed and replaced by rail bridges over Coburn Road and Exford Road.

The new station has also been future-proofed for electrification of the Melton Line, enabling Metro services to use two of the platforms in the future.

Electric trains will be housed at the Cobblebank stabling yard being built east of the station.

Crews are currently working around the clock to finish the station and bridges.

Exford Road will be closed at the level crossing from Tuesday evening 11 August until Monday 31 August to remove the boom gates, lower the road underneath the elevated rail line and crane the final bridge beams into place.

When Exford Road reopens, Coburns Road will temporarily close at the level crossing from Sunday 6 September to Thursday 24 September to remove the boom gates and reconstruct the road and footpath.

Buses will replace trains on sections of the Ballarat, Ararat and Maryborough lines from Wednesday 12 August to Monday 31 August.

When services resume on Tuesday 1 September, passengers can use the new station.

Customer service and toilet facilities will remain at the temporary station while work is ongoing across the station precinct.

Finishing works will continue until later this year, including construction of the new seven bay bus interchange, station facilities, forecourts, and landscaping.

Tours of the new Melton Station are now available on Tuesday 28 July and Thursday 30 July, at 10.30am or 2pm. The free guided tours start at Melton Station and run for approximately 45 minutes, and include a hot drink voucher from a local cafe. Tickets can be booked online here.
