Progress on a group of key infrastructure works in New South Wales has been accelerated by new joint funding from the Federal and State governments.

A combined $114 million has now been allocated to the second stage of development for a new bridge in Richmond, a historic town and suburb in Greater Sydney, in addition to surrounding bypass connections and road upgrades.

The new funding has brought the total investment in these projects to $658 million, meaning the full scope of work can now be delivered at once.

This will accelerate the delivery of this critical infrastructure while reducing long-term disruption for residents.

The existing bridge between Richmond and the nearby area of Richmond North is a vital crossing of the Hawkesbury River, carrying roughly 31,000 vehicles every day on a single lane in each direction – making it a key congestion point and critical route during floods.

Stage two of the projects surrounding the bridge will specifically deliver:

The new bridge will sit around 10 metres higher than the existing crossing to improve flood resilience for the community.

The existing bridge will be converted into a dedicated active transport connection for pedestrians and cyclists between the two areas, providing a family-friendly crossing over the river.

Once complete, the project will ease congestion, improve connectivity and strengthen evacuation access during major flooding events.

Fulton Hogan has been awarded the contract to finalise the design and deliver Stage Two of the project.

Construction is expected to start in late 2026.
