Tata Steel has signed definitive agreements with SMS Group’s Paul Wurth to deploy the world’s first EASyMelt decarbonisation technology at its Jamshedpur Works, marking a major step in low-carbon steelmaking. The phased project will be implemented at Blast Furnace ‘E’, a 649 m³ furnace, and is designed to reduce CO2 emissions by more than 50% compared with baseline operations.

The partnership builds on an earlier June 2023 MoU between Tata Steel and SMS Group and reflects the company’s broader push toward cleaner steel production and its net-zero by 2045 ambition. Tata Steel said the technology offers a flexible route for decarbonising existing ironmaking assets, making it especially relevant for brownfield steel plants.

For the steel industry, this move is significant because it combines industrial-scale innovation with practical emissions reduction at an operating blast furnace. If successful, the Jamshedpur project could become a model for future steel decarbonisation projects in India and beyond, strengthening Tata Steel’s position in sustainable steel manufacturing.
