Vietnam will need nearly 4 million tons of steel rail between 2026 and 2030 to support its high-speed railway and urban transit projects, according to the Ministry of Construction. This translates to approximately 28.7 million meters of track, with major demand coming from the North-South high-speed railway, the Hanoi-Hai Phong-Lao Cai railway, and the Ho Chi Minh City metro lines. To meet this growing demand, domestic steel producers are ramping up rail capacity. Hoa Phat is investing VND 14,000 billion in a rail mill at its Dung Quat complex, with a designed annual capacity of 700,000 tons. Production is expected to reach 400,000 tons in 2027 and gradually scale up to full capacity from 2028. Meanwhile, VinMetal has partnered with Pomina on a rail project targeting around 5 million tons of annual capacity, with first products expected by late 2026, and output rising from 600,000 tons in 2027 to 3.5 million tons by 2030. Overall, domestic steel rail supply is expected to lag behind demand through 2027-2028, but as new capacity comes online, the market is projected to move toward balance from 2029, supporting Vietnam’s rapid railway network expansion.
