Plumbing and HVAC News6 min readBy Over the past several years, I have spent a great deal of time travelling through colder climate regions as electrification efforts accelerated, which is a polite way of saying I am Canadian and spend a lot of time crossing the country for work, talking and learning about HVAC. It has been incredibly exciting to see the massive wave of heat pump adoption. This adoption has been driven by climate commitments and policies that created a sense of urgency that left little room for hesitation. In the push for electrification, air-to-air heat pumps became the default solution across much of the country. Within this decision, there is an opportunity. The opportunity is that air-to-air heat pumps were applied as a choice, whereas a more nuanced approach might have been better. But like with any technology, you don’t know what you don’t know! After years of travelling, sitting in meetings, and participating in workshops and contractor roundtables across Canada, a pattern has become impossibl

IRVING, Texas – Feb. 9, 2026 - An industry training program continues to provide critical benefits to participating communities including eliminating water loss due to pipeline leaks and corrosion, reducing emergency water main breaks, and advancing career opportunities for the local infrastructure workforce. The program teaches utility technicians, operators, inspectors, and engineers the proper methods for fusion and electrofusion of high-density polyethylene (HDPE) piping systems for potable and wastewater applications. Heat fusion creates seamless pipeline connections that produce leak-free HDPE pipelines and eliminate the joint failures that plague traditional piping systems. Sponsored by the Municipal Advisory Board (MAB), an independent, non-commercial adviser to the Municipal & Industrial Division of the Plastics Pipe Institute, Inc, the training program has graduated nearly 150 utility professionals plus college students from 22 cities across the country. “Our first trai

Plumbing and HVAC News5 min readBy In the last edition of the magazine, we explored why heat loss calculations are critical for heat pump retrofits — highlighting emerging empirical heat loss calculation methods that use utility billing data as a simple option for contractors. The logic is straightforward: energy use rises and falls with a home’s heat loss, so billing data can be used to infer heat loss. This follow-up article reviews ongoing research validating these methods, practitioner insights, and early case study results from real homes. A national validation effort for empirical heat loss methods is already underway. Jérémie Leger, project lead with (NRCan) local energy efficiency partnerships (LEEP) team, explains, “Leveraging real-world data for heat loss and heat gain calculations presents a significant opportunity to improve the sizing and selection of heat pumps in Canada’s retrofit market. We have recognized its potential and are now conducting a large-scale research study on Canadian homes to assess th

Plumbing and HVAC News6 min readBy You cannot underestimate the importance of a strong team. It takes more than one person to ensure that the end result meets the expectations of all those involved. We’ve all heard a version of a saying emphasizing the importance of teammates. A jobsite is no different. A team of industry experts came together on one particular jobsite in Lethbridge, Alta, aiming to solve the issue of an ageing hot water system on its last legs. The team of experts, comprising , , and , helped ensure that the project ran smoothly and the customer was satisfied. At A-1 Truck & Car Wash, they had relied on a conventional hot water system powered by two large, two-stage boilers, each delivering two million BTUs. This lead-leg configuration meant that one boiler was operating to meet the demand, with the second only activating when needed. There were concerns from the owners of A-1 regarding a failure — if the primary boiler failed, then only one unit remained to shoulder the full demand, leaving the

New research revealed that 78% of plumbers and heating installers believe that apprenticeships are vital to encourage the next generation into plumbing and heating. The study was conducted by City Plumbing, part of Highbourne Group. It found that those who hire apprentices are largely motivated by experience and professional values. A total of 41% said they enjoy training and mentoring new talent, while 37% previously completed an apprenticeship themselves and understand how valuable the route is. Another 37% said apprentices help their business grow. The findings are part of the plumbing and heating merchant’s Taking the Temperature research, which surveyed 500 UK plumbers and heating installers. The study revealed that 74% of installers currently employ, or have previously employed, apprentices. City Plumbing said the results also point to a generational divide in apprentice hiring. More than 80% of installers aged under 35 said they work with or hire apprentices, compared with half
