ASPE Pipeline2 min readThrough the GF Water Foundation, several First Nations homes in Saskatchewan have improved air quality and living conditions thanks to Uponor radiant heating. Known as the Blanket of Warmth project, GF created a solution that integrates Uponor radiant systems with the homes’ existing furnaces to remove cold dampness that allowed mold spores to grow. The first Blanket of Warmth project was completed in 2018 with just two homes. Now, with the grant from the GF Water Foundation via the OneGF Impact Fund, more than a dozen First Nation homes have the Uponor radiant system. The community partners for the project include Cree Nation, Pasqua Cree Nation, Muscowpetung Saulteaux Nation, and Standing Buffalo Cree Nation. Unstable temperatures and high moisture in the homes’ basements led to the growth of black mold, posing a serious threat to long-term health. The Uponor system, which includes Uponor helioPEX™ pipe and Fast Trak™ radiant mats, helps to stabilize temperatures, mitigating the mol

Plumbing and HVAC News7 min readBy Over the years, there has been an increased usage of CO2 as a refrigerant. In Canada, the more traditional CO2 refrigeration market has been grocery stores. It’s difficult to get accurate data, but there has been a fairly high adoption rate of CO2 amongst grocers. The more interesting, more rapid changes are happening on the opposite end of the refrigeration spectrum — small commercial units and large industrial systems. In industrial applications, like food processing, CO2 is taking market share that used to belong to halocarbons, particularly in locations where the toxicity component of ammonia is undesirable. It is also taking market share from ammonia systems because of the perceived lower ongoing safety and operations costs. This is really apparent in jurisdictions that have operator requirements which increase the operation costs for ammonia disproportionately. Operators are expensive and difficult to find; in some jurisdictions, this is quite literally the only design require

ASPE Pipeline4 min readAs the U.S. is in the midst of a tough flu season, Americans are growing significantly more concerned about getting sick. According to the 2026 Healthy Handwashing Survey™, 70 percent of Americans are very or somewhat concerned about contracting the flu compared to 59 percent who felt that way just three years ago. That rising concern is translating into more diligent hand hygiene. The survey found that 81 percent of Americans say they wash their hands more frequently or more thoroughly during flu outbreaks and seasonal virus surges, up from 74 percent in 2023. Nearly all respondents (93 percent) believe handwashing is important to maintaining overall health, reinforcing its role as one of the most trusted and accessible ways to help reduce the spread of illness.
