BKHM BESS Sdn Bhd, a consortium formed by Blueleaf Energy and Universal Peak Sdn Bhd, has signed the Battery Energy Storage System Service Agreement (BESSA) and Connection Agreement (CA) with Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB), marking a major milestone in the development of its 100MW/400MWh utility-scale battery energy storage project in Malaysia.

The agreements establish the commercial and technical framework required for grid integration of the project, which is being developed under a Build, Own and Operate (BOO) model. The project was awarded under Malaysia’s inaugural Battery Energy Storage System (MyBeST) programme by the Energy Commission (Suruhanjaya Tenaga).

The signing took place between TNB, represented by President and Chief Executive Officer Datuk Ir. Ts. Shamsul Bin Ahmad, and BKHM BESS Sdn Bhd, represented by Datuk Ir. Raj Kumar R Gopal Pillai and Mr. Alfredo Jakub.

The Battery Energy Storage System Service Agreement (BESSA) defines the commercial structure with TNB’s Single Buyer, functioning similarly to a power purchase agreement by governing capacity commitments, system availability, and performance obligations. The Connection Agreement (CA), meanwhile, outlines the technical requirements for grid integration, including interconnection standards, protection systems, metering, SCADA integration, and operational coordination with TNB’s network.

According to the consortium, the agreements represent a key step forward in Malaysia’s energy transition and grid modernisation efforts. The project is expected to enhance grid reliability and flexibility, enable higher penetration of renewable energy, and support the objectives outlined in Malaysia’s National Energy Transition Roadmap (NETR) to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050.

Beyond strengthening grid stability, the 100MW/400MWh facility is also expected to enable future ancillary services, improve operational resilience, and create opportunities for local industry participation in the growing energy storage sector.

BKHM BESS Sdn Bhd stated its commitment to delivering the project safely and efficiently in alignment with Malaysia’s long-term sustainable energy goals.
