The Italian government has allocated EUR 591.6 million to complete funding for eight road and rail infrastructure projects, two of which are rail infrastructure projects in Lombardy.

All projects are part of the “Olympic Works Plan,” aimed at improving regional connectivity in Lombardy and Veneto as part of preparations for the Olympic Games.

Of the total, EUR 287.6  million are allocated to projects in Lombardy, and EUR 304 million for projects in Veneto. Total investments exceed EUR 1.65 billion, covered by state funds and resources already available.

“Olympic investments are not merely short-term; they contribute to the long-term modernization of transportation infrastructure, with direct effects on the safety, capacity, and connectivity of the railway network in northern Italy,” stated Transport Minister Matteo Salvini.

In Lombardy, two major railway projects have a combined value of EUR 171 million, of which EUR 40.4 million comes from the Investment Fund, and the remainder from funding already secured.

This project aims to increase safety and improve the flow of rail and road traffic by eliminating grade crossings on the railway line that intersects National Road SS38.

The work involves separating traffic levels, replacing level crossings with grade-separated crossings, and carrying out infrastructure improvements that reduce the risk of accidents and enhance the continuity of rail traffic on the Milan–Tirano route, a key corridor for regional mobility and tourism in the Alps.

The project has a total value of EUR 66 million, of which EUR 31.5 million is financed by the Investment Fund, and EUR 34.5 million comes from other sources that are already available. This project aims to modernize and optimize one of the most important railway hubs in Lombardy, located on the Milan–Northern Italy axis.

The work includes reconfiguring the railway infrastructure, improving traffic capacity, increasing service reliability, and reducing operational conflicts between passenger and freight trains. In practice, the project aims to improve the flow of rail traffic in the greater Milan metropolitan area, where train density is very high.

The total project cost is EUR 105 million, of which EUR 8.9 million comes from the Investment Fund, and over EUR 56 million represents available and allocated financial resources.

The rehabilitation of the Busto Arsizio/Gallarate/ Cardano is part of a strategic program to modernize the railway infrastructure in Lombardy, which includes both strengthening the Rho–Gallarate corridor by expanding capacity and improving connections, as well as optimizing connections to Malpensa Airport via dedicated rail links, thereby contributing to increased efficiency and integration of the transportation network.
