Connecting the Kruunuvuorenranta residential area, the island of Korkeasaari and central Helsinki, the bridge was designed by WSP with subconsultant Knights Architects. It was built by Finnish companies YIT and Kreate, with project management services from HTJ.

Its 135m-tall central pylon is illuminated along with the structure’s façade, with lighting changing according to the time of day and season. 

Highly stressed steel and infrared concrete components were selected for submerged areas and

cable-stayed bridge steel cables were designed to withstand accumulation of snow and ice during the winter.

Sami Niemelä, WSP’s lead designer for the bridge, said: “In designing the Kruunuvuori bridge, we considered the needs of users alongside technical requirements and sustainability considerations.

“From the outset, the focus was on pedestrian and cyclist safety, a comfortable travel experience, and barrier-free accessibility.”

The bridge has a 200 year long service life and is one of the largest in the world dedicated only to public transport, pedestrians and cyclists.

Tram services on the bridge are scheduled to begin in 2027.
