A major upgrade of the Richmond Road, Railway Terrace and Croydon Road intersection in Adelaide’s west will improve traffic flow and access between the city and South Road as part of the River Torrens to Darlington (T2D) project.

Early works will commence in Keswick later this month on the more than $70 million jointly funded project, which forms part of the T2D project’s $850 million Broader Network Upgrades package.

The upgrade will improve travel between the city and South Road while providing better access to local destinations including the Mile End Homemaker Centre, the SA Athletics Stadium and the Netball SA Stadium.

Forming part of a broader series of ongoing and completed road network improvements, the project complements works currently underway to deliver a non-stop South Road.

About 36,000 vehicles currently travel through the intersection each day, making increased capacity an important part of Richmond Road’s role along the T2D motorway between the northern and southern tunnels.

Key features of the upgrade include:

Other improvements include new pedestrian crossings, traffic signals, LED road lighting, line marking and drainage.

Main works are scheduled to begin in the second half of 2027, with completion expected by the end of 2028. The project is expected to support 145 jobs during construction.

The timeline has been developed through careful planning to coordinate and sequence works along Richmond and South roads as part of the T2D project.

The $850 million Broader Network Upgrades package sits within the $15.4 billion T2D project budget, funded equally by the Federal and South Australian governments.

These network improvements include:

The non-stop South Road project is expected to be completed by 2031 and will save travellers up to 40 minutes during peak periods.
