Investigations and planning are underway for short and long-term upgrades to the Princes Highway through Narooma and for the Narooma Bridge in New South Wales.

These will be completed through the Narooma Bridge and Transport Improvements Study, a feasibility study jointly delivered by the Federal and State governments.

Brendon James, Transport for NSW Acting Executive Director – Partnerships and Integration South, said routine maintenance to Narooma Bridge will ensure it remains safe and serviceable into the future.

Meanwhile, planning will continue for longer-term options for the bridge and surrounding area.

“Transport for NSW has begun planning a large-scale maintenance program on the bridge, which will include strengthening, repairs to the steel elements affected by corrosion, as well as paint removal and repainting,” James said.

“We will keep the community informed as planning progresses and as we start to develop a suitable schedule of work to ensure we can minimise impacts wherever possible.”

James also said that concurrently, the Narooma Bridge and Transport Improvements Study is investigating long-term opportunities for both the bridge and the Princes Highway to improve access and efficiency for all road users.

“The study will look at options to improve holiday congestion through town, addressing tight road geometry on the northern approach and the narrow lanes on the bridge,” he said.

“We’re considering the bigger picture for Narooma and how people move through the town, across the Wagnoga Inlet and connect with the highway, while supporting the town’s liveability, amenity and sense of place.”

James warns that members of the community may see transport representatives out in the field as investigations are carried out to inform the next stage of the study.
