A series of warning road signs have been spotted on a road in Essex using kilometres to measure distance, instead of miles.

The signs on the A130 between the A12 and A127 south of Chelmsford show distances in kilometres under a warning for an uneven road.

The signs were spotted by a producer at BBC Essex who flagged it to listeners and on social media.

Under the Traffic Signs Regulations and General Directions (TSRGD) 2016, all official distance and hazard-extent road signs must use miles, fractions of a mile, or yards. Metric units like kilometres or meters are not permitted on general traffic and distance signs.

This stretch of road is maintained by County Route on behalf of Essex Highways. BBC Essex says it has contacted the company for comment.
