Japan has made a preliminary determination that hot-dip galvanized steel sheets and coils imported from China and South Korea were sold at unfairly low prices, affecting the profitability of domestic steel producers. The finding is a key step in Tokyo’s anti-dumping investigation and could lead to trade measures if confirmed in the final ruling.

The investigation began in August 2025 after Nippon Steel, Kobe Steel and two other Japanese steelmakers submitted a petition. The companies argued that weaker domestic steel demand and competitively priced imports had forced local manufacturers to reduce prices.

Japanese authorities have extended the investigation by four months, with the review now expected to continue until December 12, 2026. Hot-dip galvanized steel is widely used in construction and outdoor applications due to its strong corrosion resistance.The final decision will be closely monitored by steel exporters, manufacturers and buyers across Asia. Any anti-dumping duties could influence regional galvanized steel prices, import volumes and future trade flows.
