steelJSW Steel, Bharatia and Carbon Iceland International have signed a strategic MoU to explore a large-scale green methanol project in India. The collaboration aims to support industrial decarbonisation by converting carbon emissions from steelmaking into low-carbon fuel.
The proposed 300 KTPA eMethanol project is planned in Raigad, Maharashtra. It will study the use of carbon dioxide from JSW Steel’s operations and combine it with green hydrogen produced through renewable energy. This approach could create a scalable carbon capture and utilisation model for India’s steel sector.
The project also supports India’s clean energy goals and may help hard-to-abate sectors such as steel, shipping and heavy manufacturing reduce their carbon footprint. JSW Steel will bring industrial expertise, Bharatia will support project development and financing pathways, while Carbon Iceland will contribute carbon capture and e-fuels technology know-how.
