steelSwedish steelmaker SSAB reported a stronger start to 2026, with steel production rising 3.3% year-on-year in the first quarter, supported by improving demand in Europe and stable market conditions in North America.The company produced 2.01 million tonnes of steel during January–March 2026, while rolled steel output increased 5.2% to 1.87 million tonnes. Total steel shipments reached 1.74 million tonnes, up 3.6% from the same period last year.
SSAB Europe led the growth, increasing steel production to 1.14 million tonnes, with shipments rising to 919,000 tonnes. The company also recorded strong demand for premium and specialty steel products, with specialty steel shipments in Europe reaching a record high.
SSAB Special Steels also improved performance, supported by demand for high-strength steel grades. In North America, SSAB Americas reported stable shipments, helped by energy sector demand and steel service center activity.The company expects stable shipment volumes in the second quarter, with slightly higher selling prices likely to support performance.
