Thyssenkrupp Steel is set to supply its Bluemint recycled CO₂-reduced steel to the BMW Group for the production of its BMW iX3. The steel will be used on the outer panels, interior parts, and the battery housing. Georgios Giovanakis, chief sales officer at Thyssenkrupp Steel, said: "With Bluemint recycled steel, the BMW Group has access to a CO₂-reduced steel product that meets the highest quality requirements and can be used directly in series production. “The fact that Bluemint steel is used for both outer panel components and battery housings shows the great potential of CO₂-reduced steel. Electromobility and climate‑friendly steel together make an important contribution to reducing industrial emissions." As well as the reduction in CO₂, the high recyclability of the steel also improves its sustainability. Bluemint steel is part of Thyssenkrupp Steel’s transformation pathway towards carbon-neutral steel production. The company plans to replace the coal-based steel production with a hydrogen-capable direct reduction plant. The plant will produce up to 2.5Mt of DRI per year, enabling an annual CO₂ reduction of up to 3.5Mt. The supply of steel to BMW is set to start in 2026.
