CGC Inc. has opened a $210-million wallboard manufacturing plant in Wheatland County, Alta., aimed at expanding supply in Western Canada.

According to a press release, the 214-acre facility will produce Sheetrock-brand wallboard for residential, commercial and infrastructure projects. CGC, the Canadian division of USG Corporation, said the plant is expected to improve supply reliability in the region.

Construction began in 2024. The project is part of a broader $325-million investment that also includes the revitalization of CGC’s Little Narrows gypsum quarry in Nova Scotia.

CGC said the facility is designed to reduce carbon emissions by 20 per cent and water use by 25 per cent, while achieving zero manufacturing waste to landfill. The site also includes on-site solar generation.

Producing wallboard closer to Western Canadian markets is expected to reduce transportation distances and associated emissions, the company said.

The company said the project has created nearly 100 full-time jobs, with about 80 additional positions supported through related economic activity.
