The Greek Ministry of Finance has secured funding for the electrification and fitting out of the Paleopharsalos – Kalambaka line with the European Train Control System (ETCS) Level 1. The 80 km line was opened between 1885 and 1886 as part of the metre-gauge Thessalian Railway. Operations on the metre-gauge line ceased in 1998. From 2000 onwards, the line gradually resumed operations on standard gauge. Following cutbacks during the 2011 financial crisis, Greece planned to upgrade the line from 2020 onwards, in conjunction with the Volos – Larissa line. The contracts for electrification and signalling were about to be awarded when two storms in autumn 2023 caused severe damage. Since then, operations on the line have been suspended. Repair work is currently underway. With the funds now made available, the planned ETCS equipment can be installed in addition to the repairs.
