Berrylands station in South West London will close from Monday 11 May, until the end of September, for a £6 million programme of upgrades.

From Monday 11 May, South Western Railway (SWR) services will not call at the station while engineers replace the station’s two platforms and carry out safety enhancements.

The station sits on top of a five-metre embankment and its platforms are partially made of timber. As part of the upgrade, new platforms made from glass-reinforced plastic will be installed, extending the life of the station for decades to come.

Passengers will also benefit from improved lighting, CCTV, Customer Information Screens and station help points. Once complete, the work will provide passengers with modern platforms and improved facilities.

A rail replacement bus service will operate between New Malden and Surbiton every 30 minutes while the station is closed, which will include the temporary closure of the ticket office, car park and toilet facilities.

Buses for New Malden will depart from Stop B, and buses for Surbiton will depart from Stop A, on Surbiton Hill Park, a short walk from Berrylands station. Passengers travelling towards London should travel from New Malden, and passengers travelling towards Woking should travel from Surbiton.

Residents and businesses near the station may experience intermittent footway restrictions on Lower Marsh Lane, parking suspensions on Chiltern Drive, and occasional, temporary road closures for construction access. Network Rail and SWR are working  closely with stakeholders to minimise disruption and provide advance notice of any traffic changes.

“We know closing the station for several months will be inconvenient, but this £6 million investment will provide our passengers with a much better experience when travelling with us. We’re grateful to the local community for their patience while we carry out these important upgrades.”

Preparatory works, including vegetation clearance, utility diversions and ecological mitigation to protect any native wildlife, are already underway. The main construction phase will include site set-up, platform demolition, piling and modular platform installation. Final snagging and site demobilisation will take place after the station has reopened.
