Ballarat Station’s new pedestrian overpass is now open, marking the completion of the station upgrade.

The overpass includes stair and lift access to each platform, allowing people with a disability, luggage or prams to cross the rail line without leaving the station.

The 28-metre overpass is wide enough for two wheelchairs or mobility scooters to pass, improving access for passengers with mobility needs.

Its design was developed in consultation with disability advocacy groups and endorsed by Heritage Victoria, reflecting the community’s preference for a solution that respects the station’s heritage while minimising visual impact on existing buildings.

Aluminium cladding features a series of curves inspired by the heritage ironwork on the platform canopies, along with a perforated design that improves visibility while providing shelter from the weather.

Open belvedere balconies with glass balustrades in the lift landings have been designed to provide scenic views of the clock tower and train hall.

Accessibility upgrades to the station’s northern entrance were completed last year, including a new ramp, stairs, handrails and an automatic swing door.
