New Jersey Dot Provides Grants For 11 Freight-Rail Projects

The

New Jersey Department of Transportation

(NJDOT) recently awarded 11 grants totaling $26.3 million through the Rail Freight Assistance Program for

2026.

The grant

program is designed to help

preserv

e

and improv

e

the

state’s f

reight transportation system and by making freight

-

rail service more widely available for businesses

in New Jersey

.

Grants typically fund

up to 90% of an eligible project’s estimated cost, NJDOT officials said in a press release.

The sponsors of projects chosen for funding are

required

to continue freight service on an improved line for at least 10 years after their project is completed.

“These grants for critical freight

-rail

infrastructure improvements are investments in our future to provide for the safe and efficient movement of goods in New Jersey, while reducing truck traffic on our highways

,” said NJDOT Commissioner Priya Jain.

The larger grants and

recipients

include:

$4.8 million to Conrail for a port capacity project in Elizabeth;

$3.9 million to

South Jersey Port Corp. for rail improvements at the Balzano Marine Terminal in Camden City;

$2.8 million to Winchester & Western Railroad for a Seashore Branch access project in Millville City; and

$2.8 million to the New York,

Susquehanna

and Western Railway Corp.
