Motorists travelling on the Castlereagh Highway south of Walgett will benefit from safer and more reliable journeys following the completion of a $4.25 million upgrade at Nugal Swamp.

The NSW Government investment has delivered 5.42 kilometres of upgraded highway near Gidginbilla Road, 46 kilometres south of Walgett, with work commencing in March 2026 and completed on time within three months.

The Castlereagh Highway is a vital connection for regional communities, supporting the movement of people, goods and services across north-western New South Wales.

Transport for NSW Executive Director, Damien Pfeiffer, said the work has delivered lasting benefits for local communities, freight operators and visitors travelling through the region.

“Upgrading this section of the Castlereagh Highway provides a smoother, safer and more reliable journey for everyone who uses the route, whether they are travelling for work, business, tourism or to access essential services,” Pfeiffer said.

“The upgrade included widening sections of the highway and rehabilitation of the road pavement with a new spray seal surface to improve ride quality and increase the resilience of this important regional transport link.”

Pfeiffer said completion of the work means the speed limit on this section of the Castlereagh Highway at Nugal Swamp can now return to 110km/h after almost six years at the reduced 80km/h limit.

“Safety is always our number one priority,” Pfeiffer said.

“The return to the 110km/h speed limit reflects the significant improvement in road conditions and will help improve travel efficiency while maintaining a safe road environment for motorists.”
