railwayOn 1st June 2026, the government of the Balearic Islands awarded a contract for the detailed design and construction planning of the future Palma – Llucmajor railway line for around EUR 3 million net. The contracting authority is Serveis Ferroviaris de Mallorca (SFM), whose Board of Directors approved the award. Following the signing of the contract, the contractor has 22 months to complete the work, subject to project approvals. In parallel, the award of a second lot for the overall coordination of the project contracts, with a base budget of EUR 1.8 million net, is at an advanced stage. The 30 km new line, featuring almost 10 km of tunnel, is scheduled to go under construction in 2028 and be completed in 2032. It will connect Palma with Llucmajor in 30 minutes and the airport from Palma in 12 minutes. Connections are also planned to the Son Llàtzer University Hospital, s’Arenal and several industrial estates. The routing for the section from Palma to Llucmajor has been finalised and the strategic environmental assessment has been completed. The total budget for the project is EUR 811 million and covers planning, construction, new electric multiple units (EMU) and a new maintenance centre. The demand forecast stands at 8.5 million passengers per year.
