The U.S. Department of Transportation (US DOT) has announced plans to develop a public-private partnership for the redevelopment of Washington Union Station, committing an additional 24 million USD to support project planning.

The funding will be used to develop a partnership model intended to expand station capacity, improve passenger facilities and accelerate the delivery of the redevelopment programme.

The announcement follows a previous commitment made in May 2026, when U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean P. Duffy unveiled a 466 million USD investment to fund structural repairs, expand the passenger concourse, enhance security measures and introduce additional family-focused facilities at the station.

The latest funding forms part of a revised redevelopment strategy for the historic rail hub. Last year, the boards of Amtrak and the Union Station Redevelopment Corporation (USRC) agreed to restore federal oversight of the station through a cooperative agreement with the FRA.

The revised approach replaces an earlier expansion proposal developed under the previous administration. The department said the new strategy aims to prioritise essential infrastructure improvements while seeking private-sector investment to help fund future expansion.

Overhauling the historic Washington Union Station is a pivotal part of President Trump’s plan to make D.C. beautiful and safe. This is the gateway to our nation’s capital–it’s time its infrastructure reflect that. We’re not just throwing money at the problem like the last administration did. We’re thinking strategically and creating a public-private partnership to deliver meaningful upgrades to Union Station, ensure long-term profitability for this gorgeous transportation monument, and better serve the millions of travelers who rely on this critical transit hub.

The redevelopment model will mirror the approach being taken for the New York Penn Station Transformation project, with USRC and Amtrak working to attract private investment through revised design and construction methods.

Alongside the redevelopment planning, the FRA is undertaking a service optimisation study to assess how passenger rail operations can be maintained during construction while maximising future capacity.

This funding allows us to partner with the private sector to engage the industry’s best ideas for the station’s future expansion through a vision that is both ambitious and achievable. It’s a critical opportunity to reimagine the project and develop a clear, fundable path forward for the future of Union Station. We appreciate the ongoing support and investment from the U.S. Department of Transportation and for recognising the station’s redevelopment as a national priority.

Washington Union Station is one of the busiest rail terminals in the United States, serving Amtrak’s Northeast Corridor services alongside commuter rail operators and Washington Metro connections. The redevelopment programme is intended to modernise the historic station while maintaining rail services throughout construction.
