The New South Wales Government has committed $230 million to 83 road safety upgrades as a part of a $2.8 billion State Budget investment.

Funding will support infrastructure development at high-risk locations which aim to reduce the severity and likelihood of crashes.

Developments will include safety barriers, rumble strips and shoulder widening in areas that the community has helped to identify as dangerous.

About 62 per cent of road safety funding in the 2026-2027 NSW Budget will go to regional areas.

Some safety upgrades coming include a $30 million program to install more safety barriers on the Hume Highway, a $13.9 million upgrade along the Newell Highway to improve line marking and safety barriers, as well as a $7.3 million upgrade at the Great Western Highway and Kington Street intersection to install new traffic signals.

Additional upgrades include a $7 million upgrade to traffic signals on the Old Hume Highway that locals and the member for Camden have long called for, a $5.9 million upgrade to pedestrian crossings and traffic signals on the Great Western Highway at Emu Plains, as well as a $3.1 million development of the Beecroft Road and Kirkham Street intersection.

Several of these builds are underway, with all projects estimated to be completed in the next three years.

NSW minister for Roads and Regional Transport, Jenny Aitchison said these upgrades are about protecting the lives of Australian motorists.

“Every life lost on our roads is one too many. These targeted upgrades are about making high-risk areas safer and helping more people get home to their loved ones,” Aitchison said.

“We’re investing in practical safety improvements where they’ll have the greatest impact, reducing the risk of serious crashes and saving lives across NSW.”
